Today

Duluth: An artist reception for “Image a Day,” a 90-day photographic journey by Travis Melin, runs 5-8 p.m. today and Saturday at On the Rocks Art Studio on the third floor of the ICO building, 307 Canal Park Drive. Melin’s photos will be on display through March 18 at the gallery, which is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday.

Saturday

Duluth: The tropics will be the theme of the 20th annual Lake Superior Family FunFest 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. today and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center. Exhibits run the gamut from sports and recreation to face-painting, cakewalks and a carnival midway. Admission is $6 at the door with $1 off coupons available online at www.lundeenproductions/funfest. There is an additional cost for the carnival rides. A number of organizations benefit, including Just Kids Dental and Shriners.

Superior: The Bong Spirit Speakers Series kicks off with a presentation by author and aviation researcher Tom Culbert, who will share the story of African American troops deployed to West Africa in 1942 as part of the effort to establish air routes and support facilities across the African continent early in World War II. The free lecture begins at 10 a.m. in the classroom of the Richard I. Bong Veterans Historical Center, 305 Harbor View Parkway.

Superior: North End Arts Gallery, 1323 Broadway St., holds the SnowSnakes (gooniginebigoog): A Winter Story. From 1 to 3 p.m., Built for Speed race games are held at the Broadway Community Gardens and “Just for Lookin’ Exhibit” awards and reception runs 3-6 p.m. In addition, Laughing Fox, a traditional Native American storyteller and flute player, performs “A Winter Story” at 3 p.m. at the gallery.

Cloquet: The Carlton County Historical Society starts a Junior Historian Club for all students between the ages 12-14. An orientation meeting begins at 1 p.m. at 406 Cloquet Ave. Take a tour of the museum exhibits and behind scene areas not open to the public. See a short movie and learn about Triskaidekaphobia. To become a junior historian, the annual membership dues are $10, which includes unlimited free admission to the museum and a book.

Sunday

Superior: A pancake breakfast bar runs 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Pilgrim Lutheran Church, 820 Belknap St. The meal includes pancakes and a variety of toppings with additional breakfast items available. Admission is $5 for ages 10 and older, $3 for children younger than 10. The public is welcome. The church is handicap accessible. Call 715-392-4731.

Superior: Students and families receive free help filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid at Superior High School starting at 2 p.m. Students who attend can also enter to win $250, $500 or $1,000 scholarships. Representatives from the University of Wisconsin-Superior financial aid office are available to assist students and families during the event. Superior: Seniors can dance to the oldies at the Superior Eagles Club, 1710 N. 12th St., 1-4 p.m. Music provided by Mr. Ed and Drummer Dave. All couples and singles welcome. Bring snacks to share for lunch. Admission is $5. Lunch and coffee served at 2:30 p.m.

Duluth: The 16th annual St. David’s Day Open Reading begins at 7:30 p.m. at Teatro Zuccone, 222 E. Superior St. Named for the patron saint of Wales, and of poetry, the free reading is open to all. Former Duluth Poet Laureate, Sheila Packa, hosts the evening, and she, Rachel Ford, Ryan Vine, Kat Mandeville, Michelle Matthees, Julie Gard, John McCormick and others read their work. The public is invited to bring one original poem or a poem by another author to read aloud. Sign up to read as you arrive. Time is limited to three minutes for each poem.

Superior: Learn more about why pharmaceuticals are a problem and what to do with them during a live webinar 10-10:30 a.m. The free presentation is available at www.ci.superior.wi.us/webinar. This is part of the city’s Environmental Matters Webinar Series. Past seminars are archived at the site and can be accessed anytime.

Superior: The Superior Central High School class of 1957 meets for lunch at noon at The Shack Restaurant. All classmates, spouses, and guests invited to attend.

Superior: A free showing of the HBO documentary film, “The Weight of the Nation” runs 5-7 p.m. in Great Room C at the Yellowjacket Union at the University of Wisconsin-Superior. The film confronts America’s obesity epidemic. Local health and nutrition professionals and UWS faculty and staff offer discussion points about the growing issue of obesity. Free.
