Midgets too tall for Tiger girls

The Hurley Midgets spoiled the Northwestern High School girls basketball team’s Parents’ Night with a 60-50 victory Monday night in Maple.

Honored at halftime, along with their parents, were seniors Beth Gurske, Aliex Friend, Jordan Johnson, Gwen LaPole, Katie Hansen and Angela Snow.

The Tigers kept things close in the first half, tying the game at 5-5 before trailing 12-10 at the first break.

Hurley took a pair of eight-point leads in the second quarter thanks to a pair of Sam Ofstad 3-pointers.

Johnson helped keep the Tigers close with a three-point play before the Midgets eventually took a 31-24 lead at the half.

Hurley increased its lead to 11 points early in the third quarter only to see Northwestern rally and make it a 46-44 game on two free throws by Snow and two 3-pointers and a buzzer-beating jumper by Ogren.

The Midgets pulled away in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Tigers 14-6 and taking a 12-point lead before settling for the 10-point victory.

Ogren led the Tigers with 15 points. Hansen added 11 points, Friend had seven, Johnson and Snow had five apiece, LaPole had four and Hailey Aller made a 3-pointer.

Sam Ofstad led Hurley with 22 points.

The Tigers wrap up their regular season when they host Hayward at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Northwestern’s first WIAA playoff game is at home against Osceola at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 26.

Tiger boys win finale

The Northwestern boys basketball team wrapped up its regular season with a 37-36 win over the Bloomer Blackhawks Friday night in Maple.

The Tigers improved to 11-11 overall and 6-8 in the Heart O’ North Conference despite getting only three points, all in the fourth quarter, from leading scorer Dylan Jardine.

Grant Pearson and Tanner Follis picked up the slack with 13 points apiece, and Nick Murray and Micah Olson added four points each.

Logan Faschingbauer led Bloomer with nine points. The Blackhawks kept the game close with seven 3-pointers, including two each by Dustin Clark and Matt Salm.

The Tigers begin WIAA postseason play today when they host Cumberland in a WIAA regional game at 7 p.m. The winner advances to Friday’s regional semifinal game at Hayward.
