Eagles basketball teams enjoy mixed success on Parents’ Night

The Solon Springs boys basketball team celebrated Parents’ Night with a 50-40 win over the Bayfield Trollers Friday night in the SSHS gym.

Seniors playing their final home game of the regular season were Brett Missinne, Trey Scheldroup, Austin Haskins, Jacob Dahlberg, Tyer Long and Hunter Hendrickson.

Dahlberg led the Eagles with 13 points, with Scheldroup next with 12 points.

Solon Springs also got seven points from Missinne, six from Logan Long and Austin Khalar, four from Tyler Long and two from Hendrickson.

Don Gordon led Bayfield with 21 points.

The Eagles are the No. 4 seed for the upcoming playoffs and host No. 13 Winter at 7 p.m. today. The winner will play against the winner of No. 5 Frederic-No. 12 South Shore Friday night.

Eagle girls fall

The Solon Springs girls basketball team fell to Bayfield 54-52 on Feb. 11. It was the final home game of the season for the Eagles and for seniors Valerie Garay and Brittney Armstrong.

“Brittney Armstrong has awesome defense and always seems to grab the ball when the other team is making a run for it,” said Solon Springs coach Kate Klinzing. “Valerie Garay is an all-around player that can play any position. These two work great together and are friends until the very end.”

The Eagles (6-14, 5-11) trailed 11-7 after one quarter and 27-22 at halftime. Bayfield maintained a five-point lead through three quarters, but Solon Springs closed the gap in the last eight minutes by outscoring Bayfield 18-15.

“It was a tough one,” Klinzing said. “We had two seniors who wanted to end their last home game with a big win.

“Even though we came two points short, in my opinion, we won that game. The Eagles played like a team and kept the ball going until the final buzzer.”

Tylor Kruse led the Eagles with 15 points. Shayla Bornholdt finished with 13 points, and Alicia Jensen added 12.

“This game showed how hard the post players work and how big of a threat they can be when they want to be one,” Klinzing said. “I couldn’t be happier than seeing the ‘Ea-Gals’ take the game to heart and want it so bad; you can’t take that away from them.”

Victoria Gokee-Rindal led Bayfield with 14 points, which included an 8-of-12 performance at the free-throw line.
