Dale Sydney Baker, passed away at age 85 on Feb. 7, 2013, in Alpine, Calif., after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
He was born on Sept. 30, 1927, in Frederic, Wis. to Esther and Sydney Baker. Dale had a brother, William, who preceded him, and a sister, Carole, of Griffith, Indiana.
Dale served in the U.S. Navy in the closing months of World War II. He married Donna Bersell in 1949, who preceded him in 2008. The family moved from Superior, Wis. to San Diego in 1956. He retired in 1986, after working 30 years as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service. He traveled the country with Donna, and also managed with Donna a self-storage business in San Marcos for several years. He loved classic cars, traveling, laughing, and most of all his family, who will miss him deeply.
Dale is also survived by his children and their spouses Vicki Baker and Steve Wapnowski of San Diego, Calif., Bryan Baker and Debra Popineau-Baker of Apple Valley, Calif., Tracy Scott and Diane Baker of New Port Richey, Fla., and Valli and Marty Cox of Alpine Calif.; grandchildren Chris Evans, Cori Wapnowski, Scott Hall, and Brittany and Heather Baker; and two great-grandchildren, Michael and Aiden Hall.
A memorial service will be held Feb. 23 at 1 p.m. at Bethel Christian Assembly, Alpine, Calif. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation in Dale’s name to UCSD Alzheimer’s Research (http://adrc.ucsd.edu/givenow.html).
