UWS women sweep Finlandia

The University of Wisconsin-Superior women’s hockey team wrapped its regular season with a series sweep of the Finlandia Lions this weekend at Wessman Arena.

The Yellowjackets won Friday’s game 10-1 then completed the sweep with a 6-0 win Saturday.

Lynne Larson led UWS with two goals and two assists. Kiara De Kezel also had two goals and Haley Olmstead and Kerry Mayhew added a goal apiece.

Megan Leikkari picked up the shutout in goal for the Yellowjackets with eight saves. Breanna Hynes stopped 49 shots for the Lions.

De Kezel scored three goals while Chelsey Wierschem and Mayhew each notched two in Superior’s win Friday night.

Leikkari stopped nine shots for UWS and lost her shutout bid when Finlandia’s Siera Hache scored with four seconds remaining.

Hynes made 38 saves in the loss for Finlandia (0-24).

UWS improves to 16-7-2 overall and 13-6-1, which is currently good for fourth place in the NCHA and a home series in the upcoming O’Brien Cup Playoffs.
