SHS gymnasts set team record

The Superior High School gymnastics team is peaking at the right time. With only a week left in the regular season, the Spartans set a new team record Saturday at the Ashland Invite.

“We had an awesome meet,” said Lynda Ritsche, SHS assistant coach. “Not only did we have several of the gymnasts score their own personal highest on individual events, but we broke the team/school record as well.”

Superior finished second of six teams with a score of 132.80. The previous high score for the Spartan gymnasts was 126.85 from Feb. 19, 2010.

Ashland won the meet with a team score of 135.05.

Four Spartans also earned individual accolades. Jessica Engstrom and Tay Boykin both placed in the all-around standings. Engstrom finished fifth on vault, fourth on bars, third on beam and seventh on floor to take third in the all-around standings. Boykin finished seventh in the all-around with fifth-place finishes on floor and beam and a seventh-place finish on vault.

Giselle Sziron placed in all three of her events, taking second on vault, third on bars and third on floor; and Holly Bayless was third on vault and sixth on beam.

Superior finished its regular season Thursday at Grantsburg and now prepares for the WIAA Division 1 sectional meet Feb. 23 at Chippewa Falls. Competition begins at 11 a.m.

Gymnasts who place in the top five in each individual event and the top five in the all-around advance to state. The state meet is March 1-2 in Wisconsin Rapids.
