Police: Superior impersonating an officer incident was fake

A woman who reported being stopped by a fake police officer in Superior could face charges for allegedly faking her story.

Surveillance footage taken at the time of the alleged incident on Jan. 14 indicates no such traffic stop ever occurred, according to a news release from Deputy Chief Nick Alexander with the Superior Police Department.

The Superior Police Department received a report of an impersonating an officer incident early the morning of Jan. 14. A 34-year-old Superior woman reported that a man claiming to be “Officer Darg” with the Superior Police Department subjected her to a traffic stop at about 1 a.m. while she was parked in the alley across from the Superior Post Office, according to the police report. The woman said she was allowed to leave after providing vehicle registration and proof of insurance.

It was quickly determined that no official law enforcement agency was responsible for the traffic stop so the incident was initially classified as an impersonating an officer event and an investigation was opened, Alexander said. Video footage from that night shows the alleged traffic stop never occurred, according to the release.

Providing false information to the Police can be a crime in the state of Wisconsin and this matter has been referred to the District Attorney’s Office for consideration of charges, Alexander said.
