SHS hoop teams sweep Duluth East

The Spartan girls opened the night with an 82-50 win, which was followed by a wild, back-and-forth 61-60 victory by the SHS boys.

The Superior High School basketball teams swept the Duluth East Greyhounds during Tuesday night’s “Slam Dunk Cancer” event in the SHS gym.

The Spartan girls opened the night with an 82-50 win, which was followed by a wild, back-and-forth 61-60 victory by the SHS boys.

Besides raising funds to benefit breast cancer research and treatment, Tuesday’s doubleheader featured Jessica Lindstrom becoming Superior’s all-time leading scorer; the SHS boys squandering a nine-point lead early in the fourth quarter then battling for a one-point victory; and Brandon Gustafson, a senior at SHS, asking Duluth East’s Mia Anderson to the prom during halftime of the boys game with a huge sign held by friends a dozen roses.

Anderson, who scored 21 points earlier in the night for the Greyhounds, said yes.

Girls’ game

Jessica Lindstrom went into Tuesday’s game needing 14 points to surpass her sister, Lindsey, who scored 1,312 points before graduation in 2007.

Jessica Lindstrom set the new record, and gave Superior a 39-24 lead, with a basket and free throw, with 1:48 left in the first half.

Lindstrom went on to finish with a game-high 30 points as the Spartans improved to 18-2 on the season and completed a season-sweep of East. Superior also won 75-45 on Jan. 31 at Duluth East.

The Spartans also got 18 points from Hailey Kontny and 12 from Alyssa Correll.

Beside’s Anderson’s 21 points, Duluth East was led by Hannah Johnson’s 22 points.

The Spartans play at Rice Lake Thursday and Hayward Monday. Both games begin at 7:15 p.m.

Boys’ Game

Spartan sophomore Nick Mehlum led a well-balanced attack with 17 points. Derek Kontny was next with 15 points and Erick Tunell added 14. Superior also got seven points from Jordan Hughes, five from Bryan Sanders and three from Ben Erickson.

Superior held leads of six points in the first quarter, nine points in the second quarter, and seven in the third. But each time East battled back and all three times took leads.

The Spartans matched their largest lead of the game, 43-34, on a Bryan Sanders basket just seconds into the fourth quarter.

The ’Hounds followed with a 10-0 run and took a 44-43 lead on two Mat Lochner free throws with 4:50 remaining.

After the teams traded baskets, the game was knotted up at 48-48, 50-50 and 52-52 over the next couple of minutes.

Kontny’s 3-pointer gave Superior a 55-54 lead with 2:00 left and a Sam Thompson free throw tied the game for one last time at 55-55.

Hughes’s driving lay-up gave the Spartans the lead for good, 57-55, with 1:07 remaining.

Mehlum, who tied the game up at 52-52, came up with a steal and lay-up for a 59-55 game.

Mehlum then came up with a defensive rebound, but Tunell was fouled and missed the front end of bonus situation.

Shaq Coleman got East within 59-57 with :04.4 left, but Tunell was fouled again and this time sealed the victory by making both free throws to make it a four-point game with :03.4 showing.

Coleman nailed an uncontested 3-pointer at the buzzer to make the final score 61-60.

Coleman led East with 25 points. Chase DeDominces and Lochner added 14 points apiece.

Superior wraps up its regular season at 7:15 p.m. Thursday at Grand Rapids.

SPARTAN SPIN: Superior’s JV improved to 18-2 with a 52-42 win. Jake Libal led the way with 13 points while Johnny Curphy, Connor Gray and John Lindberg added nine points apiece. … Superior’s freshmen team also won 59-27 to improve to 19-0 and run its unbeaten streak to 40-0. Brett Lozon scored 13 points and Terrell Wong and Shaun Petrovich had seven points each for the Spartans.
