The name of the Iowa man who was killed Friday afternoon in northern Bayfield County in a snowmobile accident has been released.
Scott Mandernach, 43, of Odebolt, Iowa, died on impact with a tree, according to a release from the Bayfield County Sheriff's Office.
The incident occurred on the snowmobile trail about two miles south of the Cornucopia in the town of Bell.
Emergency response to the scene included the South Shore Ambulance Service, Herbster and Cornucopia fire departments, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, U.S. Border Patrol and deputies from the sheriff’s office.
When emergency responders arrived on scene it was apparent Mandernach died on impact with a tree. Mandernach was traveling with a group of nine others who had departed the Iron River area for trail riding earlier in the day.
Although the investigation continues by the Wisconsin DNR, it is believed speed and alcohol are contributing factors in the crash, the sheriff’s department reported.
