Northwestern High School’s Jackson Doller advanced to next weekend’s WIAA sectional wrestling meet with a second-place finish at Saturday’s regional meet in Spooner.
After receiving a bye, Doller, who moved up a weight class to 170 pounds, pinned Matt Seames of Barron, lost to Corwin Deetz of Rice Lake, then won by forfeit over Seames.
“Jackson came up with a big pin and then in the finals wrestled his best match of the season,” NHS coach Bob Coleman said. “He was pinned earlier this season in the first period by Deetz, but battled to the end today.”
Also for the Tigers, Luke Jarman finished in third place, Michael Bessler, Jackson Carlson, Justin Little and Quentin Seger all finished fourth and Jay Karich, Cody Waters and Josiah Vik all came in fifth.
“We had a great tournament,” Coleman said. “It was the best we’ve wrestled as a team. I’m so proud of this young team, they just kept working and getting better every practice and meet. We beat kids today that beat us earlier in the year.
“It was an exciting day for us and I’m excited for these guys to see them next year because I’m sure they are going to do what it takes to improve in the off season and come back stronger than ever. We have a bunch of great guys to coach.”
Saturday’s sectional meet is in Somerset. The top three finishers in each weight class will advance to the state tournament.
