The Superior High School girls basketball suffered just its second loss of the season with a 77-61 loss to DeLaSalle Saturday afternoon in Minneapolis.
“I am very proud of the way my girls battled,” said SHS coach Phil Roe. “We came in as the underdog tonight and gave DeLaSalle more than they expected in their house.”
Jessica Lindstrom led the Spartans (17-2) with 32 points. Hailey Kontny added 16 points, Alyssa Correll had nine and Abby Clemons and Alison Wainionpaa added two apiece. Shannon Johnstad and Taylor Nelson were both out with injuries for Superior.
Tyseanna Johnson led DeLaSalle with 21 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Allina Starr added 18 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists and Natalie Eull had 11 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots.
Superior trailed by 18 in the second half but managed to cut the lead to eight points with about three minutes left to play.
Lindstrom then picked up her fifth personal foul on a touch foul and the Islanders held on for the win.
“Even though we lost the game on the scoreboard, I felt like we won,” Roe said. “We definitely proved that we can hang and play with the best of the best. I am really happy with our progress this week and I am confident we are getting better and peaking at the right time heading into playoffs.”
Superior hosts Duluth East at 5:45 p.m. today and plays at Rice Lake at 7:15 p.m. Thursday.
SPARTAN SPIN: DeLaSalle led 38-31 at halftime. … Lindstrom was 14-of-18 from the free-throw line. … DeLaSalle is now 20-3 on the season and is currently ranked No. 2 among Class 3A Minnesota schools.
