Duluth boxer Gary Eyer overcame a first-round knockdown to earn a majority decision over David LaQue of Bloomington, Minn., in the main event of the Friday Night Fights season-opener Friday at Grandma’s Sports Garden.
In Friday’s other professional bout, Harley Kilfian of Menominee, improved to 10-12 after his opponent, John Moxey of St. Paul, was disqualified for punching Kilfian after the referee called a break in the second round of their scheduled four-round cruiserweight bout. Moxey, a native of the Bahamas, fell to 1-2 despite knocking Kilfian through the ropes.
There also were 14 amateur boxing matches, with fighters from Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan. Six amateur fighters from Jungle Boy Boxing Gym in Duluth earned victories: Jesse Walters (70 pounds), Joe Tuttle (75), Marcus D’Auria (145), Xavier Cosey (190), Aidan Guthrie (175) and Corey Hartman (165), while Eliseo Caranza lost a split decision to Koltyn Hensler of Community Boxing Club in a 95-pound bout.
Friday was the first of five scheduled boxing events set for Grandma’s Sports Garden this year, including March 15, May 10, Sept. 20 and Nov. 15.
