Skate donation creates equal opportunity for Superior youth

The Superior Parks and Recreation Department is seeking gently used hockey and figure skates.

These donated skates will be at city skating shelters to encourage skating by children of all levels and experience.

Between Feb. 11 and Feb. 28, skates will be accepted 4-10 p.m. weekdays and 1-9 p.m. weekends from Feb. 11 to Feb. 28. Drop skates off at 3631 E. Second St. in Allouez; North 18th Street and New York Avenue in Billings Park; Carl Gullo, 510 26th Ave. E.; Pattison, 1016 Faxon St.; Red Barn, 901 E. Sixth St.; 5902 Weeks Ave. in South Superior; and Wade Bowl, 1228 Clough Ave.

Additionally, skates may be dropped off at Play It Again Sports between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

The winter skating program offers outdoor pleasure skating and hockey in a supervised setting. In a typical year, the Parks and Recreation division receives about of 5,000 visits by youth, families and young adults.

“These skates will help give children of all ages and experience an equal opportunity to participate in a community pastime,” said Caitlin Knoll, program coordinator for the Parks and Recreation Division.
