Superior, Duluth bowlers clash again on Sunday

Landmark Lanes will be a busy place Sunday afternoon as it hosts the Superior vs. Duluth All-Star Bowling matches. The 39th annual Twin Ports All-Star Bowling Match and the 12th annual Senior All-Star Bowling Match begin at 1 p.m.
The Duluth All-Stars lead the series with Superior 23-15 and have won the last two events, including last year 3270-3238 at Stadium Lanes in Duluth.
The Superior Senior All-Stars have won five straight matches over Duluth and now lead that series 6-5. Superior won last year’s event 3,036-3,020.
Members of the Superior All-Stars are Pat Erickson, 45; Kyle Kantola, 21; Todd Sorenson, 34; Darren Hietala, 37; and Matt Meyers, 29. Mike Higgins, 22, is the team’s alternate.
The Superior Seniors include captain Stubby Cosgrove, 58; Roger Christenson, 62; Doug Sorenson, 63; Pete DeGraef, 57; Cliff Gagner, 58; and alternates Bob Kolbe, 69; and Mick Higgins, 60.
Members of the Duluth All-Stars are Joe Marciniak, Mark Cole, Mike Bellefeuille, Mike Martens, Tom Ojanen and alternate Darrin Carlson.
The Duluth Seniors team includes Bill Polanka, Bob McClarey, Bob Roskoski,
Rick Olson, Ron Laliberte and alternate Jibber Swanson.
Superior All-Stars
* Erickson, whose highest average this season is 223 in the Village Friday Night Bud Classic, has made 16 all-star appearances. He has 24 300 games and 20 800 series, with a high series of 867. He was the men’s doubles champion in 1996 with city tournament record of 1,522 actual. Erickson is a member of the SABA Hall of Fame.
* Hietala’s high average is 218 in the Village Friday Night Bud Classic. He is making his 15th all-star appearance and had 13 300 games and three 800 series to his credit. He has been a member of a team champion in Superior and Duluth as well as a doubles champion in Superior and a singles championship in Duluth.
* All-star rookie Kantola had a high average of 213 in the Landmark Veterans League. He has two 300 games and his high series is 783.
* Sorenson’s high average is 228 in the Village Friday Night Bud Classic League. The eight-time all-star had 15 300 games and seven 800 series with 833 his highest. He has been a member of the city team champ in 2005, 2006, 2009 and 2011. He also won single titles in 2007 and 2009 and an all-event champ in 2008 and 2009.
* Meyers’ high average is 226 in the Landmark Veterans League. He’s making his fifth all-star appearance and had 11 300 games and five 800 series to his credit. He was a member of city team champs in 2010 and 2011 and is currently the vice president of the SABA.
* Higgins, who averages 211 in the Village All Parish League, is making his first all-star appearance. He was a member of the Wisconsin Junior State Champion Team.
Superior
Senior All-Star
* Christianson, who averages 224 in the Village All Parish League, is making his 17th all-star appearances. He has nine 300 games and five 800 series. The member of the SABA Hall of Fame, was the all-events champ in 2005 and on the mixed team champ in 2006. He also earned a bronze medal in team event in 2002 at nationals in Billings, Mont., with a 1,174 game.
* Cosgrove, who averages 193 in the Village All Parish League, is making his third all-star appearance.
* Gagner, a three-time all-star, averages 205 in the Friday Miller Commercial League at Landmark Lanes.
* DeGraef will bowl in his sixth all-star event. He averages 213 in the Landmark Veterans League, has bowled one 300 game, was on three city team championship teams, one all-event and one all-event handicap champion teams.
* Sorenson, in his 14th all-star event, averages 209 in the Village Tuesday VFW League. He has bowled four 300 games, had been on four city team championship and two singles actual championship teams and one singles championship with handicap.
* Kolbe averages 194 in the Village Commercial League. This is his second all-star appearance and has bowled one 300 game. He was on the Senior Citizen championship team in 2010.
* Higgins averages 195 in the Saturday Mixed Nuts league at Village Lanes. This is his first all-star appearance. He has one 300 game and was part of the city doubles champion in 2012.
