Northwestern's Schulz signs with Michigan Tech

Northwestern High School senior Luke Schulz signed a national letter of intent Wednesday to play for the Michigan Tech Huskies.

Schulz, a 6-foot-4, 250-pound lineman, earned Heart O’ North Conference honors in both his junior and senior seasons playing for the Tigers.

“He was a strong tackle for us, and certainly his frame and his size and what he was able to do with that helped us immensely,” said Dennis Scherz, NHS head football coach. “I think he’s selected a school that matches his educational goals and will serve him well long-term.”

Schulz, a 4.0 student, was first contacted by Michigan Tech about halfway through the football season. He thanked Scherz, Andy Lind and his other high school coaches for helping him draw the attention of the Huskies.

“I had great coaching; that’s what it all came down to,” Schulz said.

The senior decided to sign with Michigan Tech after visiting the campus and meeting with the football team. He said he appreciated the team’s chemistry and felt Michigan Tech fit his academic goals.

“They have a really good academic program — top 25 in the country I believe,” Schulz said.

Schulz plans to major in mechanical engineering.

Michigan Tech finished with a 7-3 record in 2012 and earning a share of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference North Division title.
