UWS loses, remains in hunt for second place in WIAC

A 53-48 loss at UW-River Falls Wednesday night cost the University of Wisconsin-Superior women’s basketball team an opportunity to take over sole possession of second place in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

The Yellowjackets began the night tied for second place in the WIAC with UW-Stevens Point, but while UWS was losing at Karges Center in River Falls, the Pointers were doing the same with a 56-53 loss to UW-Oshkosh.

UWS and UWSP remain tied with records of 18-5 overall and 10-4 in the WIAC. UW-Whitewater (17-5) is in first place at 11-2 and Oshkosh (18-4) is still in the hunt for a title at 10-3.

UWS has two games remaining, including at Whitewater at 3 p.m. Saturday. The ’Jackets wrap up the regular season at UW-La Crosse on Feb. 16.

Point has Saturday off, then hosts UW-Stout and UW-Eau Claire. After hosting Superior, Whitewater has games left with Oshkosh and River Falls.

The Yellowjackets led 46-43 with 4:13 remaining Wednesday night, but the Falcons outscored UWS 10-2 over the final three minutes for the victory.

Sally Linzmeier had 15 points and nine rebounds for UWS, while Connie Urmanski added 12 points.

Brittany Gregorich and Jessie Van Wyhe each had 15 points for River Falls (13-9, 7-6).

’JACKET JOTTINGS: Saturday’s game at UWW’s Kachel Gymnasium begins at 3 p.m. and may be heard locally on KUWS 91.3 FM. … The last time UWS and UWRF played, the Yellowjackets trailed by six points at the half before rallying for a 72-67 win at Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium. … Urmanski appeared in her 99th career game, tied for second on the all-time list. She is one game away from tying the school record, held by Kelsey Thingvold (2007-11). Her 12 points increased her career total to 1,122 and with one assist she now has 265, second all-time. … Kailee McDonald also played her 96th career game, tied for fourth all-time. … Hillary Peterson had two blocks, giving her 69 for her career, 17 behind Courtney Lane (1997-01) for second all-time. … Linzmeier, with her four steals, now has 81 on the year, breaking the single season record for steals. The previous mark of 80 was held by Brenda Hedrick (1992-93) and Julie Meysman (1979-80).

Men lose at home

Zach Peterson’s three-point field goal with 57 seconds to play gave UW-River Falls a 72-69 come-from-behind victory over UWS Wednesday night in a WIAC men’s game at Mortorelli Gym in Superior.

UWS (9-14, 5-9 WIAC) led 42-29 at the half, 45-31 early in the second half and 55-45 with12 minutes to play before River Falls rallied.

The Falcons (8-14, 3-10) outscored UWS 12-3 over the final four minutes, including nine straight points by Arik Smith. Peterson’s winning field goal gave River Falls its only lead of the second half.

The Yellowjackets, who missed three field goal attempts in the last 40 seconds, were led by Jarrod Peterson and Bronson Byrne, each with 16 points, and Austin Cahil with 14.

Smith sparked River Falls with 25 points, and Peterson had 15.

UWS is at UW-Whitewater at 1 p.m. Saturday.
