The Superior High School girls basketball team improved to 15-1 with an 85-52 win at Grand Rapids Friday night.

The Spartans jumped all over the Thunderhawks by taking a 14-0 lead. Superior eventually led 53-34 at halftime.

"I feel like our team is peaking right now and all of the girls’ hard work is really paying off,” SHS coach Phil Roe said. “I have a team with a combined 3.5 GPA and whose basketball IQ's are better than any team I coached so it is fun to throw teams four or five different looks defensively at them and have my players execute them at a high level.

“We also had some huge steals from four different players to start the game. It was fun to see.”

Jessica Lindstrom led the Spartans with 29 points. Alyssa Correll added 15 points, Hailey Kontny had 11; Ali Wainionpaa had nine; Abby Clemons and Rachel Fregin had five points apiece and Tailor Schuster had two.

Also for the Spartans, freshman MacKenzie Kmecik scored her first four varsity points

Superior, the No. 1 ranked team among large schools in the area, hosts Esko, the top-ranked team among small schools in the area at 7:15 p.m. today.
