Long wins HON wrestling title; Spartans seventh as a team

The Superior High School Spartans finished seventh in the Heart O’ North Conference Wrestling Tournament Saturday at Ladysmith.

Cumberland won the team championship with 232.5 points. The host Lumberjacks were second with 217 points.

Superior, which finished with 95 points, was led by Nicholas Long, who finished in first place at 106 pounds. Brandon Olson also finished third at 113 pounds, Nathan VanErt (120) and Tyler Lehikoinen (132) both finished fourth, and Ross Kennelly (145), Billy Regner (170) and Joey McDonald (195) all finished fifth.

Up next for the Spartans is the WIAA regional tournament at 10 a.m. Saturday at New Richmond. The top four wrestlers in each weight class will advance to the sectional meet Feb 16 in Marshfield.
