The Superior High School boys basketball team ended five-game losing streak to Duluth East with a 60-58 win Thursday night in the DEHS gym.
Superior's last win over the Greyhounds came in February of 2010.
“It was definitely a very good high school game,” SHS coach Dave Kontny said. “I’m proud of our kids, we trailed for most of the game but battled all night long. Our defense was the difference and it kept us in the game.
We just could not get on track offensively and part of that could have been not having a game since last Friday and we for sure did not shoot free throws well. All things considered, to come out with a win after missing 15 free throws says a lot about the character of this team.”
Erick Tunell led the Spartans with 20 points and Jordan Hughes added 14.
The Spartans improved to 13-2 with their sixth straight victory.
“I have said it all season that you never know who is going to lead us in scoring and again we had all eight guys in the scoring column,” Kontny said. “Our traps and pressure from our three guys up front led to steals from Erickson, (Bryan) Sanders and (Antonny) Valentine and that was the difference.
“Any time you can win a close game like tonight, and know your team did not play well offensively, you know you have a good team. It’s a great group, they believe they can win no matter what and they don’t care how they get the job done as long as they get it done.”
East’s Mat Lochner led all scorers with 33 points, while Shaq Coleman chipped in 18 for the Greyhounds (9-7).
