In 2012, Superior resident Don Leighton and his volunteer committee set out to raise $20,000 as part of the 3rd Annual Hunger Takes No Holiday campaign. Instead this campaign raised $32,565 which is having a large impact on Superior/Douglas County non-profit agencies and residents in need.
“We want people to know that the donations they’ve made are having impact,” said Shaye Moris, the food bank’s executive director. “Food shelf use in Superior/Douglas County has increased 38 percent this year, with 40 percent more children and 43 percent more seniors needing assistance. This support has allowed us to keep pace with demand.”
Leighton said he’d like to raise $40,000 in this year’s campaign.
Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank is the region’s only food bank and rescuer of nationally and regionally donated food for 120 non-profit agencies and approximately 43,000 people in need throughout NE Minnesota (St. Louis, Carlton, Lake and Cook counties) and NW Wisconsin (Douglas, Bayfield, Ashland and Iron Counties). Over the last year, Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank has rescued and distributed 4.7 million pounds of food or enough food for 3.7 million meals for those in need throughout the Northland.
