The University of Wisconsin-Superior women’s basketball team remains in the hunt for a conference title after Wednesday night’s 77-52 win over UW-Stout before a crowd of 800 at Mertz Mortorelli Gym.

With the win the Yellowjackets improve to 17-4 overall and 9-3 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

UW-Whitewater (16-5) is currently in first place at 10-2, UW-Oshkosh is second at 8-2 and UWS is tied with UW-Stevens Point at 9-3.

The Yellowjackets host Oshkosh at 3 p.m. Saturday. The Titans’ game Wednesday night against UW-Eau Claire was snowed out and will be played Thursday night.

Superior was coming off a disappointing 89-78 overtime loss at Stevens Point on Saturday, but coach Don Mulhern wasn’t worried about his team being ready for the Blue Devils.

“If you would have asked me after the Point game, I would have been a little worried, but we had two great practices the past two days,” Mulhern said. “This is a really resilient team and they always bounce back. At Monday’s practice it’s like “we’re going.” So there were no negative after effects. That’s a tribute to the players and shows their love of basketball.”

The Yellowjackets also had a little incentive on their side having already lost to Stout earlier this season in Menomonie.

“We had a bitter taste in our mouth and we had a little revenge on our minds,” said UWS sophomore Kristen Nett. “It wasn’t the prettiest game, but we came out with the win.”

The ’Jackets played well in spurts in the first half and managed to build a 37-27 halftime lead.

That all changed after the intermission as UWS quickly increased the 10-point lead to 25 points (59-34) just five minutes into the second half.

Leading the charge were Nett and Hillary Peterson.

Peterson scored eight of her 15 points in the first 2:58 of the second half and Nett followed up with nine straight points, which included a pair of 3-pointers and a 3-point play.

“We’re working the ball really well together and that helps open up shots,” Nett said. “They can’t guard every single one of us, and every single one of us can shoot.

“There’s also not very many people can stop Hillary’s shot. We all have a lot confidence in her and I think that gives her the self-confidence to knock her shots down.”

The ’Jackets eventually made it a 28-point game, 64-38, on a pair of Britnee Blake free throws, and their largest lead was 69-40 on a Kailee McDonald bucket with 6:56 remaining.

Nett led the Yellowjackets with a game-high 16 points, which included 4-of-6 shooting on 3-point attempts.

Peterson was next with 15 points, and Sally Linzmeier was all over the court with 12 points, six steals, four assists and seven rebounds.

Katelynne Folkers and Brea Boomer led Stout with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Stout’s only lead of the game was 1-0 on a Boomer free throw.

UWS gradually built a 13-point lead, 22-9, on a Peterson basket and free throw and a Sally Linzmeier basket.

Stout made things interesting, scoring 12 of the next 13 points to get within 23-21.

“They went on a little bit of a run when we lost a bit of our concentration,’ Mulhern said. “But the good thing about this team is we’re able to refocus, re-gather and pick it up again.

“We are able to regain what we had rather than lose it all completely.”

A Nett 3-pointer stopped Stout’s run and gave UWS a 26-21 lead with 5:25 left in the first half.

The Yellowjackets eventually rebuilt their lead for a 32-27 halftime lead.

“Every game’s an incentive to play your best,” Mulhern said. “There might have been a little incentive knowing they (the Blue Devils) can beat us, so you having to respect the situation. But you go into a game wanting to play well because you want to play well.”

Saturday’s game is the final home game of the regular season for UWS and the team will celebrate Senior Day, honoring McDonald, Connie Urmanski and Peterson.

“That’s a special group, there’s going to be a lot of emotions and those kind of things,” Mulhern said. “We also know we have a very tough game on our hands, Oshkosh is a very good team.”

‘JACKET JOTTINGS: The UWS women are undefeated at home so far this season. … Urmanski is now in sole possession of third place on the all-time games played list with 97. She is four games away from breaking the school record, held by Kelsey Thingvold (2007-11). … Urmanski is also fifth in points (1,092) and third in assists with 259, four behind Kati Galovich (2001-05) for second on the all-time list. … McDonald played her 94th career game, moving her into a tie for seventh on the all-time list. … Peterson added three more blocks to her career total, giving her 65, 21 behind Courtney Lane (1997-01) for second on the all-time list. … In other WIAC action, Stevens Point defeated UW-Platteville 79-60 and Whitewater got past UW-La Crosse 58-56. … Former Northwood Evergreen Rachel Hanley had two assists, two steals and a blocked shot in 13 minutes for Stout.
