UWS Roundup: USA U18 team downs Yellowjacket men

University of New Hampshire recruit Tyler Kelleher of Longmeadow, Mass., scored three goals Sunday afternoon as the United States Under 18 team of Ann Arbor, Mich., defeated the University of Wisconsin-Superior 7-1 in a college men’s exhibition before 743 fans at Wessman Arena.

The U18s broke open a scoreless game with three goals in the second period and four in the third, and outshot UWS 32-11. Michigan recruit Evan Allen and Yale recruit John Hayden each had two goals for the U18s, who lost 3-1 to Minnesota Duluth on Saturday.

UWS freshman forward Sam Prpich broke Hunter Miska’s shutout bid with 4:13 to play. Drew Strandberg of UWS stopped all 11 shots he faced in the first period.

On Saturday, three second-period goals led UW-Stout to a 4-1 Northern Collegiate Hockey Association men’s win over UWS in Menomonie.

The game was tied 1-1 after one period, including a goal from Jeff Forsythe of UWS, before Stout pulled away.

Gavin Tufte and Mike Hartviksen had goals two minutes apart for Stout (10-9-2, 5-9 NCHA). Superior (11-9-1, 6-7-1) led 31-23 in shots on goal. Ryan Pinoniemi had 19 saves for the Yellowjackets.

UWS plays at UW-Stevens Point at 7 p.m. Friday and at St. Norbert at 4 p.m. Saturday.

Women sweep Marian

Kelsey Firkus and Dani Schultz each scored two goals to lead the UWS women’s team to a 9-1 rout over Marian University in a NCHA game Saturday afternoon at Wessman Arena.

The Yellowjackets also defeated Marian 2-1 Friday night to improve to 11-6-1 overall and 8-5-1 in the NCHA. Marian falls to 3-12-2, 2-8-2.

Firkus and Schultz each netted once in a four-goal first period and again in the second for a 6-1 advantage. The Yellowjackets added three more goals in the final stanza.

UWS outshot Marian (3-13-2, 2-9-2) 42-15.

On Friday, senior defenseman Bailey Lane scored the game-winning goal 3:28 into the third period to give No. 9-ranked UWS the 2-1 win.

UWS led 1-0 after one period on a Hayley Epema goal and Marian tied it on an Amanda Waigand power-play goal in the second period.

The Yellowjackets led 40-10 in shots on goal. Winning goalie Megan Leikkari had nine saves.

UWS plays at St. Norbert at 6:30 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. Saturday.

Point sinks UWS men

Jordan Giordana scored 20 points to lead four players in double figures as UW-Stevens Point cruised to an 82-55 win over Wisconsin-Superior in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game Saturday at Bennett Court in Stevens Point.

The league-leading Pointers (18-2 overall, 11-0 WIAC) shot 56.4 percent from the field and hit 10 of 19 from 3-point range. Giordana was 4-for-6 from beyond the arc.

Brendan Bauer’s 16 points paced the Yellowjackets (8-12, 4-7), who hit just 30 percent of their 3-point attempts.

UWS plays at UW-Stout at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

UWS women lose in OT

Sam Barber had 27 points and nine rebounds as No. 15 UW-Stevens Point beat Superior 89-78 in a key WIAC matchup before 800 fans at Berg Gym in Stevens Point.

Alyssa Olp and Miranda Tyler added 13 points apiece for the Pointers (16-4 overall, 8-3 WIAC), who made 14 of 16 free throws in the extra session to pull away.

Sally Linzmeier had 21 points and 10 rebounds to lead UWS (16-4, 8-3), which shot just 35.6 percent. Connie Urmanski added 16 points and Kristen Nett chipped in with 15.

UWS hosts UW-Stout at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Track and field

The UWS men’s and women’s track and field teams competed at the Warren Bowlus Invite Saturday at UW-Stout.

Freshman Kenny McGee won the men’s long jump and triple jump with school records in both events. His long jump was 7.17 meters (23-feet-6.25 inches), while his triple jump was 14.33 meters (47-25). He is currently ranked No. 4 in both events among NCAA Division III athletes.

Also for UWS, Nils Hansen finished fourth in the men’s weight throw. His toss of 17.26 meters (56-7.5) is a school record, beating his previous best throw last week at Bemidji State. He is also ranked No. 16 in the nation.

Katie Capriglione won the women’s weight throw with a school record distance of 17.19 meters (56-4.75), which places her No. 5 in the nation.

The Yellowjackets’ men’s 4x200-meter relay, which included Derek Solarz, Kevin Danielson, Mike Sorenson and McGee, also finished first with a time of 1:34.94.

UWS will host the Border Battle Invitational Saturday in the Lydia Thering Fieldhouse (Marcovich Wellness Center). Field events begin at noon with running events getting underway at 12:30 p.m.

Also competing will be St. Scholastica, Bemidji State, Minot State and St. Mary’s.
