Spartan boys drop ’Dockers

The Superior High School boys basketball team improved to 12-2 overall with a 58-34 win over the Ashland Oredockers Friday night in Ashland.

The Spartans, who led 28-14 at halftime, got 18 points from Derek Kontny and 12 from Bryan Sanders.

“It was a nice conference win,” SHS coach Dave Kontny said. “I was a bit concerned about a letdown after the big win against Rice Lake and not having a game all week but we came ready to play and played well on both ends of the court.”

The Spartans played without leading scorer Erick Tunell, who was out with the flu. He was replaced in the starting lineup by Carter Anderson, who finished with four points.

“Carter stepped up and had a nice game at the point for us,” Kontny said. “Our scoring was balanced again and we made them work for every basket.”

The Spartans also got eight points from Nick Mehlum, seven points from Anthony Valentine, four from Ben Erickson, three from John Lind berg and two from Jordan Hughes.

“Ben had a rough night, taking an elbow to the head then an elbow to the eyem which was black and blue by the end of the game and almost swollen shut,” Kontny said. “But he played though it like he always does.

“Now we have to get healthy in a couple of days with three games in the next five days.

Tuesday’s game at Chippewa Falls was postponed because of freezing rain and the closure of Chippewa Falls High School.

The Spartans play at Duluth East at 7:45 p.m. Thursday then host Menomonie at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
