Spartan dance team advances to state in two events

NEW RICHMOND — The Superior High School dance team finished first and third in the high kick and pom events, respectively, at the Western Dance Regional Saturday at New Richmond High School.

The Spartans began the day with a third-place finish in pom. Eau Claire North finished first and Stevens Point was second.

Superior wrapped up the day with its fifth straight regional championship in High Kick. Merrill finished second and Tomah was third.

The Spartans will compete in both events at the Wisconsin Association of Cheer/Pom Coaches State High School Dance Championships on Saturday at the La Crosse Center.

The Spartans are coached by Casey Carlson, Erin Carlson, Jessica Cohen, Emily Hall, Nicole Scharte and Rachel Schimenek.

Members of the team include: seniors Lindsay Sommer, Anessa Lawrence, Haley Tribbey; juniors Shaylee Sockoloski, Megan Dallman, Sam Roske, Courtney Quam, Haley Siers, Brooke Larsen, Riley McGrath, Emily Olson, Rachel Stipetich and Emily Stack; sophomores Kjertsten Lisak, Geordann Glonek, Gabby Heytens, Taylor Lindsey, Nikkie Honness and Sam Hansen; and freshmen Sophie Goad, Alyssa Lawrence, Sara Thompson and Alysha Johnson.

SPARTAN SPIN: Sommer and Anessa Lawrence are the team captains. … There will be a state send-off for the dance team at 7:50 a.m. Friday in the SHS gym. The event is open to the public. … At state, Superior competes in the pom at 9:46 a.m. and in the kick at 1:07 p.m.
