Spartan wrestlers pin Golden Bears

The Superior High School wrestling team won 11-of-14 matches in a 59-12 win over the Barron Golden Bears Thursday night in the SHS gym.

Brandon Olson, Levi Day, Tyler Lehikoinen, Jake Jaques, Alain Pierre, Billy Regner and Joseph Miller won by pins; Nick Long, Ross Kennelly and Sam Freeman won decisions and Nate VanErt won by forfeit.

The Spartans won the first seven matches before Barron’s Tim Sandmann won by pin.

The Bears other win was the last match of the night where Connor Massie pinned Joey McDonald, who moved up from 195 to 285.

“The boys wrestled well,” SHS coach Chris Brochu said. “The key was getting off to a good start. They were missing a few guys, but our intensity level was high in every match.”

The Spartans host Ashland at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
