UWS RDP: Women's hoop still tied for first place
Men's basketball, hockey teams also in action
Connie Urmanski and Hillary Peterson each scored 16 points to lead Wisconsin-Superior to a fifth straight win Saturday afternoon in defeating Wisconsin-Platteville 65-59 in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Mortorelli Gym.
The Yellowjackets (15-3 overall, 7-2 WIAC) are 11-1 in the past 12 games.
Kristen Nett and Sally Linzmeier each added 12 points for the Yellowjackets, who led 25-23 at the half. Nett also had six rebounds.
Claire Poad’s 11 points led Platteville (5-13, 1-8).
UWS plays at UW-Eau Claire at 7 p.m. today and at UW-Stevens Point at 5 p.m. Saturday.
Men’s basketball
UW-Platteville overcame a nine-point first-half deficit Saturday afternoon to beat the UWS men 76-67 in a WIAC game at Mortorelli Gym.
Platteville (12-6 overall, 5-4 WIAC) was led by 22 points from Chas Cross. Platteville trailed 38-29 at half and outscored UWS 47-29 in the second half. The Yellowjackets (7-11, 3-6) led 55-53 with 9:10 to play before being outscored 11-1 the next four minutes.
Jarrod Peterson had 15 points for UWS, Brendan Bauer added 14 and Trent Davis had 10. Bauer also had eight rebounds. The Yellowjackets have lost three of the last four games.
The Yellowjackets host UW-Eau Claire, and former UWS coach Matt Siverling, at 7 p.m. today then play at UW-Stevens Point at 3 p.m. Saturday.
Women’s hockey
Short-handed goals by Kiara DeKezel and Dani Schultz allowed UWS to tie St. Scholastica 3-3 in overtime Saturday afternoon in a Northern Collegiate Hockey Association game at Wessman Arena.
Chelsea Wierschem of UWS scored with 3:01 to play to force overtime. The Saints (9-5-3 overall, 6-4-2 NCHA) led 2-0 with goals three minutes apart early in the second period from Nina Waidacher and Briana Stephens. DeKezel and Schultz scored unassisted later in the period for UWS (9-6-1, 6-5-1).
The Saints led 3-2 in the third period on an Alana Levido goal at 7:15.
UWS led in shots on goal 38-26. In goal were Teraysa White of St. Scholastica and Shanley Peters of UWS.
The series opened Friday night with UWS winning 3-1 at Mars Lakeview Arena.
DeKezel, Alison Shrift and Schultz scored for the Yellowjackets.
Nikki Logergren scored for the Saints.
Peters had 13 saves for Superior and White had 31 saves for the Saints.
UWS hosts Marian College (3-11-2) at 7 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. Saturday.

Men’s hockey
UWS lost a pair of games this weekend at UW-Eau Claire.
The Yellowjackets gave up three unanswered goals to lose 3-1 Saturday night and saw Jordan Singer score three goals in a 5-2 Blugold win Friday night.
Joey Massingham gave UWS a 1-0 lead at 9:11 of the first period on a power-play goal on Saturday, but the Yellowjackets were held scoreless the rest of the way.
Brandon Stephenson stopped 38 shots for Eau Claire (14-3-2 overall, 9-2-1 NCHA), while Ryan Pinoniemi made 19 saves for UWS (10-8-1, 5-6-1).
Eau Claire got off to a 2-0 lead midway through the first period of Friday’s game on two Singer goals.
Josh Kesler got UWS within 2-1 after 20 minutes.
UWS trailed 4-1 when Pat Dalbec scored his 14th goal of the season with 4:38 to play.
Eau Claire had a 33-27 shots-on-goal edge. Drew Strandberg started for UWS and was replaced by Dennis Nordmark after the first period.
UWS dropped out of the USCHO Division III men’s Top 15 after being ranked No. 13 last week.
The ’Jackets play at St. Scholastica at 7 p.m. Thursday and at UW-Stout at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. UWS will then host the USA U18 team at 5 p.m. Sunday.
The U18 team plays at Minnesota Duluth Saturday night.
