A fire that appears to have been started by a heat gun destroyed an older mobile home in Superior on Monday afternoon.

The Superior Fire Department was called to Nemadji Trailer Park and Campground at 3:22 p.m. The first firefighters on the scene saw smoke and flames coming from the trailer at 3132 E. Fifth St.

Both residents got out safely and there were no notable injuries. Firefighters cleared the scene after three hours.

While the fire remains under investigation, Battalion Chief Vern Johnson said the suspected cause of the fire was a heat gun that was being used to thaw frozen water pipes. The fire department estimated a loss of $40,000 — $25,000 for the mobile home and $15,000 for the contents.

The two residents had family nearby to stay with, Johnson said, and the home was insured.
