SHS boys fall to ’Hounds, gear up for ‘Showdown in Titletown’

Ryan Lundgren scored four goals and added two assists to lead Duluth East to a 10-3 rout of Superior in the opening game of a high school boys hockey doubleheader at AMSOIL Arena Saturday afternoon.

Aaron Miller, Aaron Wakefield-Zubiate and Tyler Nystrom scored for Superior (10-5-1), which led 2-0 before the fifth-ranked Greyhounds (13-4) tied the score on Lundgren’s first goal and the first of two by defenseman Meirs Moore.

East, which scored nine goals in the second period Thursday against Apple Valley, broke a 3-3 tie with a pair of goals in the final minutes of the second period and tacked on five in the third, including three in a span of 1:13.

Zach Reiswig had 37 saves for the Spartans, who had 16 shots on goal.

The Spartans’ game at Duluth Denfeld Tuesday was postponed because of cold weather. It will now be played at 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 8 at the Heritage Center.

Superior will next compete in the Green Bay Notre Dame’s Showdown in Titletown. The Spartans open at Wausau West at 8 p.m. Friday. Superior will then play Madison Edgewood at 2 p.m. Saturday and Orchard Lake (Mich.) St. Mary’s at 9:30 a.m. Sunday. Saturday and Sunday’s game are at the Cornerstone Arena in Green Bay.
