Superior police search for missing snowmobiler

The Superior Police Department, along with several other agencies, is investigating a missing snowmobiler incident.

Craig W. Friebe, 51, Superior was last seen riding his snowmobile on St. Louis Bay in the area of Loon’s Foot Landing, at 31st Avenue East in Superior. Friebe spoke with friends in the early morning hours of Saturday and indicated he intended to ride on the St. Louis Bay and the Nemadji River.

An extensive search was conducted starting at 9 a.m. Sunday.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office, Superior Fire Department, St. Louis County Rescue Squad, United Stated Coast Guard, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and volunteer fire departments from the towns of Superior, Maple, Amnicon, Parkland, Brule and Poplar coordinated searches of the area. The search area has concentrated on the waters of St. Louis Bay, the Nemadji River and adjacent snowmobile trails. '.

The search has been suspended for the night and will resume Monday morning.

Anyone knowing Friebe’s whereabouts or having contact with Friebe is urged to call the Douglas County Communications Center at 715-394-4432 or by dialing 911.

Temperatures are expected to fall to 15 below zero tonight with a wind chill of 35 below, according to the Weather Channel.
