Film series turns attention to Cold War

Paul Newman, Ava Gardner, and Sean Connery are among the stars who headline the 2013 Film Series at the Richard I. Bong Veterans Historical Center. Presented in conjunction with the Bong’s exhibit, “The Twin Ports in the Cold War.” The series features 12 films that tell stories of the U.S. vs. USSR’s 1945-1989 conflict, the Cold War.

Paul Newman, Ava Gardner, and Sean Connery are among the stars who headline the 2013 Film Series at the Richard I. Bong Veterans Historical Center. Presented in conjunction with the Bong’s exhibit, “The Twin Ports in the Cold War.” The series features 12 films that tell stories of the U.S. vs. USSR’s 1945-1989 conflict, the Cold War.

The first five films comprise the winter/spring offerings. They will be shown at 1:30 p.m. on the third Tuesdays of the month, January through May, as will the fall films.

Over the summer, films will also be shown on Tuesdays but at 7 p.m. Admission to all films is free, as is popcorn. Campbell Lumber is the series sponsor.

Kicking off the New Year on Tuesday will be “The Big Lift,” starring Montgomery Clift in the story of the Berlin Airlift. Newman stars in “The Rock,” to be shown Feb. 19, followed by Rock Hudson in “A Gathering of Eagles” on March 19. The 1962 version of “The Manchurian Candidate” with Frank Sinatra is screened on April 17, and Gardner leads an all-star cast in the May 21 showing of the “Seven Days in May.”

The Summer series includes “Dr. Strangelove” on June 18, “Dr. No” — Connery’s first appearance in the James Bond series, on July 16, and “The Russians Are Coming…” on Aug. 20. Special activities are planned to complement these events.

Rounding out the year are the fall films, “The Day After” on Sept. 17, “Missiles of October” on Oct. 15, and “No Way Out” on Nov. 19. Connery returns for the last of the series, “The Hunt for Red October” on Dec. 17.
