Officer to receive citation in squad-school bus accident

A citation for inattentive driving will be issued to the Superior police officer who rear-ended a school bus at a railroad crossing last week.

A citation for inattentive driving will be issued to the Superior police officer who rear-ended a school bus at a railroad crossing last week.

Superior Police Chief Charles LaGesse confirmed Wednesday that Officer John McKinnon will receive a ticket. Because the incident involved a police officer, it needed to be looked at internally, LaGesse said.

The report also had to be written up by a supervisor, according to Sgt. Chris Kirchoff.

Law enforcement officers are asked to drive in many situations and ways that normal drivers don’t — such as in blizzards and at high speeds. As this was a standard accident, LaGesse said, it will be treated as such.

No children were on the bus at the time, and the bus was not damaged, according to Superior School District Transportation Director Tom Geisler.

The squad, an older vehicle on the department’s fleet, received minor damage to the push bar and front hood.
