LETTER: Congressman’s vote doesn’t represent us

To the Telegram:

Rep. Sean Duffy, R-Weston, was one of just 67 members of the House of Representatives to vote against assistance for communities devastated by Hurricane Sandy. I can’t for the life of me understand why he would do such a thing. Whatever our differences, the people of this country have always come together to assist communities devastated by natural disasters.

Perhaps Duffy thinks that people don’t care what happens to those in other parts of the country.

He is wrong.

I work in Superior and live in Duluth, but I grew up by the New Jersey shore. While there are some affluent communities along the Jersey shore, many of the beachfront towns are working class communities not all that different from Superior. The Jersey shore has always been a place where people from all walks of life could come to enjoy a day at the beach or perhaps an inexpensive weekend getaway. The shore is full of small, family-owned business catering to the tourist trade. Now, many of those businesses are gone and many of these communities are devastated.

I know the people of northwest Wisconsin would want their representative to come to the assistance of those struggling to recover from Sandy, just was we would hope that others would come to our assistance in a time of need.

It saddens me to think how poorly Congressman Duffy has represented the people and values of northwest Wisconsin.
