The Superior High School boys basketball team suffered its second defeat of the season Saturday in a 64-58 loss at Rochester Century.
“I thought it was anyone’s game, definitely a game we could have won,” said Dave Kontny, Superior head coach. “It was a long trip but our kids played hard. After watching the film late last night I saw some things we need to work on, but that’s the game.”
Superior led 31-28 after the first half, but Rochester Century came out strong in the second half to outscore the Spartans 36-27.
“We had our chances but things did not go our way, and when they got some bounces their way down the stretch I thought that was the difference in the game,” Kontny said.
Leading all scorers for the night was Rochester Century’s Carter Evans. The 6-foot-10 senior scored 25 points.
Three Spartans finished in double figures. Erick Tunell led the way with 19 points, Derek Kontny had 13 and Nick Melhum had 11.
Superior finished 3-of-6 from the free-throw line, and Rochester Century was 8-of-12.
The Spartans, who made 11 3-pointer Saturday, host Cloquet at 7:15 p.m. Thursday and Minneapolis Southwest at 3 p.m. Saturday.
