NHS matmen come up short against Barron

The Barron Golden Bears defeated the Northwestern High School wrestling team 48-33 Thursday night in Maple.

For the host Tigers, Nathan Markon, Jackson Carlson, Justin Little and Quentin Seger won by pins, Luke Jarman defeated David Pintens, 7-2; and Jay Karich won by forfeit.

“We had a very solid match,” NHS coach Bob Coleman said. “Every one of our wrestlers put everything on the mat.”

Barron led 12-0 when Markon came from behind to win with a pin, then Carlson, a first-year wrestler, pinned his opponent to tie the score.

After falling behind by 12 points, Karich and Little notched pins to tie the score again. After a Barron pin, Seger’s pin tied the score again.

Barron took the lead again with a forfeit at 106, but Jarman battled back with a win to put the Tigers within three. Another forfeit put Barron up by nine points before the night ended with Barron’s Alex Meyers pinning Cody Waters.

“It was a good match for us,” Coleman said. “We just need more mat time and then we will be OK. It’s just going to take time, and our guys are willing to be patient, persevere and work hard to reach their goals.

“It is going to be fun watching these young guys grow up into a championship team.”

The Tigers will compete in the Spartan Classic at 10 a.m. Saturday.
