West vs. East in UWS hockey tournament

The University of Wisconsin-Superior men’s hockey team, along with its fans, will get a taste of Eastern hockey when it hosts the Yellowjacket Holiday Tournament this weekend at Wessman Arena.

The University of Wisconsin-Superior men’s hockey team, along with its fans, will get a taste of Eastern hockey when it hosts the Yellowjacket Holiday Tournament this weekend at Wessman Arena.

Joining UWS (9-3-1) in the four-team event will be the Nichols College Bison of Dudley, Mass., and Curry College Colonels of Milton, Mass. Both teams are members of the ECAC Northeast Conference.

Rounding out the field will be the Finlandia Lions of Hancock, Mich.

The tournament kicks off with Finlandia (3-8) and Curry playing at 4 p.m. Friday, followed by UWS and Nichols at 7:05 p.m. Saturday’s games are Finlandia vs. Nichols at 4 p.m. and UWS vs. Curry at 7:05 p.m.

Nichols comes to town with an overall record of 8-4 and a league mark of 3-2. Curry is 5-5-1 overall and 3-1-1 in league play. One of Curry’s wins is a 3-1 victory over Nichols on Nov. 17.

The Bison have used three goaltenders this season. Dylan Woodring has a 4-2 record, Alex Larson is 3-2 and Patrick Salkind is 1-0.

Paul Prescott (5 goals, 6 assists) and Zach Kohn (2-9) lead Nichols in scoring with 11 points apiece. Prescott has five goals and six assists while Kohn, a senior from Delafield, Wis., has two goals and nine assists. Tyler Beasley is next with six goals and four assists for 10 points.

The Bison roster also includes freshman Steve Lecey of Cedarburg, Wis.

Curry College rotates two goaltenders, including Derek Mohoney, who is 3-3-1 and Joe Dawson, 2-2.

Ian DeLong leads with Colonels with eight goals and seven assists for 15 points. Connor Hendry is next with 14 points (six goals, eight assists) and Jordan Reed had 12 points (four goals, eight assists).

Pat Dalbec leads UWS in scoring with 10 goals and nine assists for 19 points. Joey Massingham is second with 13 points (five goals, eight assists) and defenseman Jeff Forsythe is third with 12 points (two goals, 10 assists).

Drew Strandberg is the Yellowjackets’ workhorse in goal with a 7-2-1 record and a 2.47 goals against average. Ryan Pinoniemi is also 1-0 and Dennis Nordmark is 1-1.

’JACKET JOTTINGS: Both UWS games will be carried live at KUWS 91.3 FM. … UWS has outscored its opponents 42-37. … Ticket prices are $8 for adults, $5 for youth, seniors and non-UWS students and children 6-and-under are free.
