Contest open to Lake Superior Writers

Lake Superior Writers announced it is accepting submissions for its 2013 Writing Contest with an open theme.

Lake Superior Writers announced it is accepting submissions for its 2013 Writing Contest with an open theme.

Submissions can include up to three poems; short fiction with up to 500 words; and creative nonfiction up to 1,500 words, and must be postmarked by April 1.

Manuscripts must be original and unpublished and must be typed. No simultaneous submissions. You may submit in more than one genre but can win in only one. All submissions will be read by a panel of judges.

Your name must not appear on the manuscript or poems. Contest submissions will be accepted by e-mail or regular mail.

Submissions by e-mail may be sent to writers@lakesuperiorwriters.org. For e-mail submissions include Contest 2013, name and genre in subject line. Name, e-mail, home address and phone only in body of e-mail. Please also include title of submitted piece or pieces, genre and word count for short fiction and creative non-fiction. Send submissions as an attachment such as .doc, .docx or PDF identified only by title of piece or pieces and genre. No name on attached submissions. Short-short and creative non-fiction should be double-spaced and in 12 point font.

Submissions may also be sent by regular mail to: Lake Superior Writers, Attn: 2013 Writing Contest, 1301 Rice Lake Road, Ste 129, Duluth, MN 55811. Postal submissions should also include one cover letter with name, address, e-mail and phone number plus title of submitted piece or pieces, genre and word count for short and creative non-fiction. Please include a second cover letter with just title of piece or pieces and genre.

Submissions will not be returned.

The top contest winners in each genre will be asked to read from their work at Lake Superior Writers annual meeting in the spring. Details forthcoming at a later date.

The 2013 Contest is open only to members of Lake Superior Writers. If you would like to enter this year’s contest and are not a member of Lake Superior Writers, you may mail in a membership fee of $35 along with your contest entry. Membership in LSW is renewable each year and benefits include open contest entry, LSW e-newsletter and reduced fees on workshops and classes.

Lake Superior Writers is also accepting entries from younger writers ages 6-12 and 13-17. Short-short fiction (500 words) and up to three poems will be considered, and $20 and a $5 gift card will be awarded to the top entry in the younger age group, and $30 and a $5 gift card will be awarded to the top entry in the older of the youth entry groups. Younger writers do not need to be dependents of LSW members and may enter at no cost.
