DOT issues travel advisory for high profile vehicle drivers

High winds and slippery roads causing unsafe travel for large trucks and commercial vehicles overnight in Wisconsin.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation is advising drivers that slippery road conditions, increasing winds and blowing snow are continuing to create a serious travel hazard for commercial motor vehicles, other high-profile vehicles and vehicles towing trailers. Snowfall is diminishing; however winds are increasing with overnight gusts potentially in excess of 50 miles per hour.

Temperatures will also fall throughout the night, dropping into the 20s during the day on Friday.

In the overnight hours, snow plowing and salting operations may be reduced for brief periods in some parts of the state. This is being done to give plow operators necessary rest.

Multiple incidents involving semi-tractor trailers and other large vehicles have been reported statewide throughout the day and into the evening hours.

Interstate and state highway travelers are likely to find travel through Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa and Minnesota very difficult and may encounter life-threatening conditions. Travelers in vehicles that

are disabled or run off the road may be stranded for an extended period of time during the overnight hours. Drivers should be well prepared with clothing and blankets, water, and food for this situation.
