Spartan boys top Marshall

The Superior High School boys basketball team improved to 5-0 on the season with a 67-18 win over the Duluth Marshall Hilltoppers Tuesday night in the SHS gym.

The Spartans scored the first seven points of the game before Marshall finally scored.

Thanks to tight defense and balanced scoring, which included points from eight different players, the Spartans scored the next 28 points for a 35-2 lead.

Getting into the scoring column in the first half for Superior were Eric Tunell, Bryan Sanders, Derek Kontny, Jordan Hughes, Anthony Valentine, Ben Erickson, Nick Mehlum and Carter Anderson.

Superior’s run finally came to an end when Marshall’s Alex Davis nailed two free throws for a 35-4 Spartan lead.

Superior ended the half with a basket by Kontny, which gave the Spartans a 37-4 lead as the teams went to their respective locker rooms for the intermission.

The second half was much like the first as the opened up a pair of 38-point leads.

After a 3-pointer by Marshall’s Alex Olker and a free throw by Adam Benjamin, Superior’s John Lindberg got into the scoring column to give the Spartans a 47-11 lead.

The Spartans scored 18 of the final 25 points for the 49-point win.

The Spartans play at Eau Claire North at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

SPARTAN SPIN: After Christmas, Superior will play in the Big Rivers Conference-Wisconsin Valley Conference Classic at Wausau West. The Spartans play Wausau East at 4:15 p.m. on Dec. 27 and Marshfield at 2:30 p.m. on Dec. 28.
