Spartan girls down Chisago Lakes

The Superior High School girls basketball team remained undefeated with a 65-39 win over Chisago Lakes Friday night in the SHS gym.

Defense was key for the Spartans, who allowed 25 points in the first half and then only 14 in the second.

“Our defense in the second half was the story of the game,” SHS coach Phil Roe said. “Great team defense led by Alison Wainionpaa, Natalie Kintop and Abby Clemons. All three seniors really stepped up their game on the defensive end of the court and provided a much needed spark for our team.”

Alyssa Correll led the Spartans on offense with 17 points, all in the first half.

“I’m really proud of Alyssa stepping up in a big game, busting open Chisago Lakes’ zone,” Roe said. “Alyssa has also been improving on the defensive end of the court, getting four steals.”

Jessica Lindstrom added 15 points and 15 rebounds and Hailey Kontny had eight points and 10 assists.

“It was an all-around great team effort,” Roe said. “Our goal was to hold them under 40 points and we held them to 39.

“Chisago Lakes went to state last year, so this was a big win for the Spartans.”

Brynna Fermstrom led Chisago Lakes with 19 points
