LETTER: Takers have more complaints

To the Telegram:

Since the election, over a million signatures have been collected from all parts of the country from citizens wanting to secede from the union. I don’t find it surprising at all that of the states who had the most signatures, Texas led the way with more than a million, and of the next 10 states with significant enough numbers of signee’s to warrant a reply from the federal government — they’d call it “Govmint” — eight were members of the former Confederacy.

Who said the civil war was over?

Of course none of these states are going anywhere; the constitution doesn’t allow it, and besides, even though there’s nobody left alive that remembers how things worked out the last time anyone tried to do that, a quick look at just about any American history book should tell them that it didn’t work well. Why would they want to leave anyway?

I mean it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know that most, if not all, of the states that voted for Romney/Ryan in this election are “taker” states, those that voted for the president are the “maker” states. What I mean is the states that traditionally vote Republican usually receive more in federal funds than they pay in, whereas in the traditionally Democratic states, the opposite is the norm. This means that the folks who complain the most about how the government unfairly redistributes the nation’s wealth, just happen to live in states that benefit the most from the redistribution, the red “taker states.”

Which made me think: “Hey maybe we should let them secede” but then they’d be bothering us for foreign aid, and that would cost even more.

I guess it’s just better for us to hang on to this bunch of free loaders, who knows? Someday they could be productive enough to pay their fair share.

We can always hope, right?
