UWS Roundup: UWS women win, host UWEC
The Yellowjacket basketball teams split at home with UW-La Crosse, the men’s and women’s hockey teams split their two-game series and the track and field team competed in a meet at St. Scholastica.
The University of Wisconsin-Superior athletic department had a busy weekend with both basketball and hockey teams in action as well as the track and field team kicking off its indoor season.
The Yellowjacket basketball teams split at home with UW-La Crosse, the men’s and women’s hockey teams split their two-game series and the track and field team competed in a meet at St. Scholastica.
Women’s basketball
Sophomore guard Sally Linzmeier scored 29 points, grabbed six rebounds, dished out four assists and made four steals to lead the Yellowjackets to an 80-57 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory over UW-La Crosse Saturday evening at Mertz Mortorelli Gym.
The Yellowjackets (5-2 overall, 2-1 WIAC) led 31-25 at halftime, and used a 49-32 second-half advantage to cruise to the win. Allyssa Lindberg and Connie Urmanski scored 12 and 11 points, respectively, for UWS. Maggi Bishop and Briana Radowicz each tallied 14 for the Eagles (3-5, 0-3).
UWS (5-2) is tied for second place with UW-Eau Claire (4-4) at 2-1. Superior hosts UWEC at 7 p.m. today.
UW-Whitewater is in first place with records of 6-2 and 3-0.

Men’s hockey
The UWS men’s hockey team rebounded from a disappointing 8-2 loss Friday to Augsburg with a 5-0 win over Gustavus Adolphus Saturday night at Lund Arena in St. Peter, Minn.
Yellowjacket goaltender Drew Strandberg stopped all 28 shots in his shutout over the Gusties.
Joey Massingham and Pat Dalbec scored first-period power-play goals and Dalbec added another early in the second period for his 10th goal of the season.
Sam Prpich scored his first goal in a Yellowjacket uniform with 1:12 remaining. Kevin Clark assisted on the goal for his first point of the year.
On Friday night at Wessman Arena, the Auggies scored four power-play goals and a short-handed goal as they defeated UWS 8-2.
The Auggies and Yellowjackets each scored a goal in the first period, but after that it was all the Augsburg as they won easily and improved to 3-7 on the season.
Marc Fortin scored his second goal of the season for UWS in the first period and Dalbec scored his team-leading eighth goal midway through the third period.
In between, Augsburg’s Ben and B.J. McClellan combined to put together a seven-point game.
Ben McClellan scored two goals and assisted on two others while B.J. McClellan scored twice.
The Auggies also got goals from Derek Loisel, Landon Olson, Lucas Hendrickson and Thomas Paine.
The Yellowjackets (9-3-1) don’t play again until Jan. 4 when they host Nichols College.
’JACKET JOTTINGS: Dalbec finished Saturday’s game with three points (2 goals, 1 assist) and extended his scoring streak to 13 games. … UWS sponsored a “Teddy Bear Toss” Friday night and around 100 stuffed animals were thrown on the ice after Fortin’s goal 11:19 into the game. ... UWS played without injured defensemen Jeff Forsythe and Chad Blanleil. ... Friday’s game was played before a crowd of 706. ... UWS was 0-for-4 on the power play and had 12 penalties for 54 minutes. Women’s hockey
The UWS women’s hockey team split a Northern Collegiate Hockey Association series at Lake Forest, winning 5-1 Friday and losing 4-3 Saturday.
The Yellowjackets overcame an early deficit to score five consecutive goals in Friday’s win at Lake Forest, Ill.
Kerry Mayhew and Dani Schultz each scored power-play goals and UWS tallied three times in the second period.
Marissa Weber scored goals two minutes apart midway through the third period Saturday afternoon as Lake Forest stopped No. 7-ranked UWS 4-3.
Lake Forest (3-2-4 , 2-1-4) led 1-0 and 2-1 before Weber provided a 4-1 lead.
Kelsey Firkus and Chelsey Wierschrem (on a power play with an extra attacker) scored in the final seven minutes for UWS (8-4, 5-3).
Megan Leikkari was in goal for the Yellowjackets. Lake Forest led 37-25 in shots on goal.
UWS is back in action Jan. 11-12 at Adrian (Mich.).
UWS track
The University of Wisconsin-Superior track and field team opened its indoor season at The Open meet Saturday at the College of St. Scholastica.
Superior’s Katie Capriglione and Victoria Vinokur finishing 1-2 in the women’s weight throw and shot put.
In the weight throw, Capriglione’s toss of 55 feet, 5 inches (16.89m) is currently second at the NCAA Division III level, and Vinokur is No. 9 with a distance of 48-4.75 (14.75m).
In the shot, Capriglione’s toss of 43-1.75 (13.15m) is second in NCAA D-III, and Vinokur’s throw of 42-4 (12.90m) is third.
Kenny McGee placed first in the long jump and second in the men’s 200-meter dash. His leap of 22-6.25 (6.86m) is currently seventh in the nation. His time in the 200 was 23.52 seconds.
Cam Tilberg won the mile in 4:40.04, while teammate Charles Corbett placed third in 4:43.90.
Men’s basketball
Luke Tweed’s game-high 20 points paced UW-La Crosse to a 69-58 WIAC win over UW-Superior Saturday night.
The Eagles (7-1 overall, 2-1 WIAC) led 31-27 at halftime and outscored the Yellowjackets 38-31 in the second half. Bronson Byrne led UWS (2-6, 0-3) with 16 points, while Brendan Bauer and Jarrod Peterson chipped in 12 and 11, respectively.
