SHS boys roll to 4-0 record

The Superior High School boys basketball team improved to 4-0 with wins of 69-57 at Duluth Denfeld Tuesday night and 71-55 at Minneapolis Southwest Saturday afternoon.

“Saturday’s game was very physical and we’re not used to that style, but I thought our kids did a great job adjusting and keeping their composure,” said SHS coach Dave Kontny.

The Spartans had a big first half Saturday, outscoring Minneapolis Southwest 36-20. Superior’s defensive effort was key, Kontny said.

“We are very long on the wings and got a lot of hands on balls that led to steals and easy baskets,” Kontny said. “I liked the way we contested every shot and never gave them a free look.”

Superior was 10-of-19 from the free-throw line, while Minneapolis Southwest was 7-of-10.

Three Spartans scored in double figures, with Erick Tunell leading the way with 21 points. Bryan Sanders and Nick Melhum finished with 12 points apiece.

“Offensively we moved the ball well at times and hurt them with our unselfishness, leading to easy baskets,” Kontny said. “We got 20 points from our guys down low and 15 points from our bench, and everyone was in the scoring column. That tells me we are on the right track to being a deep team.”

Cam Ross scored 18 points to lead Minneapolis Southwest, followed by Demetrius Cady with 10 points.

The Spartans host Duluth Marshall at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday.
