Auggies power past Yellowjacket men

The Augsburg Auggies scored four power-play goals and a short-handed goal in an 8-2 win over the University of Wisconsin-Superior men’s hockey team Friday night at Wessman Arena.

The Auggies and Yellowjackets each scored a goal in the first period, but after that it was all the Augsburg as they won easily and improved to 3-7 on the season.

The loss drops UWS to 8-3-1.

Marc Fortin scored his second goal of the season for UWS in the first period and Pat Dalbec scored his team-leading eighth goal midway through the third period.

In between Augsburg’s Ben and B.J. McClellan combined to put together a seven-point game.

Ben McClellan scored two goals and assisted on two others while B.J. McClellan scored twice.

The Auggies also got goals from Derek Loisel, Landon Olson, Lucas Hendrickson and former Superiorite Tom Paine. Paine’s short-handed goal gave Augsburg the 8-2 lead with 7:17 remaining in the game.

UWS plays Gustavus Adolphus at 7 p.m. Saturday at Lund Arena in St. Peter, Minn.

'JACKET JOTTINGS: UWS sponsored a "Teddy Bear Toss" Friday night and around 100 stuffed animals were thrown on the ice after Fortin's goal 11:19 into the game. ... Paine played hockey in high school at Duluth Marshall. ... UWS played without injured defenseman Jeff Forsythe and Chad Blanleil. ... Friday's game was played before a crowd of 706. ... UWS was 0-for-4 on the power play and had 12 penalties for 54 minutes. Augsburg was 4-of-8 with the extra skater and had five penalties for 21 minutes. ... There were three major penalties called -- Superior's Tanner Dion and Fortin and Augsburg's Scott Eberline. All three were give five-minute penalties and game misconducts.
