Spartan boys too much for Oredockers

The Superior High School boys basketball team improved to 2-0 Thursday with a 60-26 victory over Ashland (1-3) in Superior.

The Spartans opened the game with a 6-0 run. Nick Melhum started the run with a quick layup moments after tipoff. Erick Tunell added a pair of free throws on the next possession, and Ben Erickson then drove baseline to make it 6-0.

Bryce Miller gave the Oredockers their first points shortly afterward with a shot from the arc, but Derek Kontny answered with a 3-pointer of his own to put Superior back up by six.

Seven different players had scored for Superior by the 10-minute mark. Ashland, meanwhile, struggled to establish a rhythm against Superior’s zone defense.

The Spartans led 40-15 at halftime.

Ashland opened the second half with a 10-4 run to cut Superior’s lead to 44-25. The Spartans then took over and finished out the game holding the Oredockers to one point while scoring 16.

Melhum led the Spartans with 11 points for the night. Tunell finished with nine points, and Carter Anderson added nine points coming off the bench. He led all scorers in the first half.

Jordan Hughes and Bryan Sanders scored eight points apiece for Supeiror, Kontny had seven, and Anthony Valentine and Erickson finished with four points each.

For Ashland, Miller led with 10 points. Tyler Hunt finished with eight points, all in the first half, and John Sechen added five.

Superior ended the night shooting 11-of-14 at the free-throw line, while Ashland was 1-of-4
