LETTER: More thought, less politics

Not all is right in Wisconsin as claimed by the guest editorial on the Nov. 28 opinion page.

Local units of government and the school districts have not fared all that well under the governor’s plan to cut the state’s deficit.

Brett Healy accuses Judge Colas with playing politics with his gavel. The judge is performing his duty as directed by the Constitution. There is a reason we have three branches of government, the executive, legislative and judicial. All three are charged with keeping an eye on one another to ensure all three work within their guidelines.

What Judge Colas is saying is that perhaps Gov. Walker overstepped his authority when he was playing politics with his pen. There were, and are, a number of ways the governor could have cut the state’s spending.

Gov. Walker chose to limit funding to education and local units of government and strip public employees’ legal right to representation as his way to do it. Economic growth in Wisconsin, when compared to those of other states, is less than stellar. So what part of the governor’s plan is “still working”?

Maybe if the governor spent more time in Wisconsin working with legislature to improve the budget process instead of traveling around the country telling all who will listen how he destroyed the unions in Wisconsin, we could make some serious gains on this front.

And as far Brett Healy chastising Judge Colas for playing politics with his gavel, he should spend more time helping to solve the issue.

A little more thinking and less politicizing should be coming out of his “think tank.”
