LETTER: Congress: Cut deficit makers
To the Telegram: The debate over the federal budget makes me angry. The idea that we’re on the edge of an economic Armageddon simply isn’t true. The “fiscal cliff” is a manufactured “crisis.” Congress created this phony deadline, and they can end it.

Social Security did not cause the federal budget deficit. The Social Security trust fund currently has a budget surplus. Even if you cut Social Security benefits, this will do nothing for the rest of the budget.
Money collected in payroll taxes for Social Security and Medicare cannot be used for any other purpose.
The deficit has been caused by:
• Two unfunded wars and huge military spending.
• The 2008 Bush recession.
• The Bush tax cuts for the upper 2 percent.
• Exploding health care costs.
We need budget solutions based on the causes of the problem. Benefit cuts to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid will not solve these problems.
It will only hurt people and further depress the economy by decreasing overall spending.
We all have a responsibility to keep our elected officials working for us. Call, email or write your representatives today. Tell them, “no cuts to Social Security, Medicare, or Medicaid benefits.”
Philip Anderson,
Maple
