After opening the season against two strong non-conference opponents, Frederic and Northwood, the Solon Springs girls basketball team picked up its first win Tuesday night in Birchwood.
The Eagles defeated Birchwood 58-24. Autumn Blaylock led Solon Springs with 25 points, which included five 3-pointers.
“Autumn’s game was there last night,” said Kate Klinzing, head coach of the Eagles. “I didn’t realize that she put up so many points. Everyone was just shooting and shooting tonight and most of them just wouldn’t drop.”
Two more juniors also scored in double figures for the Eagles against Birchwood. Shayla Bornholdt finished with 12 points and Rachel Grubbe added 11. Valerie Garay added four points, and Alicia Jensen, Brittney Armstrong and Brianna Larson finished with one basket each.
Taylor Hartung led Birchwood with seven points, all coming on free throws. Meagan and Madison Vanderheyden had four points each; Serena Downey had a three; and Morgan Small, Amber Jutila and Lexi Streit chipped in with two points each.
“It was nice to relax and work on our defense and run the plays,” Klinzing said. “There are still a couple things to work on, but what team doesn’t have that.
“We still have our spark and intensity as we did last year. The girls are excited for this season.”
The Eagles play their first home game of the season Friday. They host Drummond at 7:30 p.m.
