Spartans pinned in opener

The Superior High School wrestling team opened its season with a 57-11 loss to the Cumberland Beavers Thursday night in the SHS gym.

Notching wins for Superior were Nick Long at 113 pounds and Nathan VanErt at 120.

Long, a freshman, was originally awarded a forfeit at 106 pounds, but wrestled up at 113 pounds, where he won by technical fall (16-1) over Drew Rihn. The match was called with 24.2 seconds remaining in the third period.

New SHS head coach Chip Brochu currently has 29 wrestlers on his roster, including seniors Levi Day (126 pounds) and Jaylon Brown (170).

Brochu’s assistant coach is Shawn Helmueller.

The Spartans are at Bloomer at 7 p.m. on Dec. 6.
