LETTER: Look to northeast to see government priorities

To the Telegram:

For the past two weeks, I have been watching the reports on the terrible storm damage on the East Coast. Millions of people are without homes, heat, electricity, fuel, food or other basic necessities.

One thing I have not seen is a single country offering some form of assistance. If this disaster were to have occurred in some other part of the world this nation would have sent the U.S. military. There would be video of Navy ships and aircraft delivering medical supplies, food and shelters and thousands of Americans would be volunteering to go to the scene of the disaster. In addition numerous charities would have been established and there would have been frantic pleas from Michelle Obama and Bill Clinton for Americans to donate to these charities.

Have you seen any of this for the people in the North East?

What have our state and local governments done for the victims of this terrible natural disaster in our own country?

It was almost a week before the Marines arrived, our president flew over the disaster area with the governor of New Jersey for a photo opportunity and then flew off to a campaign event — or was it the Tonight Show? He has yet to return to the scene.

The mayor of New York was busy planning for the New York Marathon and had to be shamed into canceling it so its resources could be used for disaster relief.

As I am writing this, the generators for the marathon have still not been put to work.

Just another example of our government’s priorities.
