The Superior High School boys basketball team opened its season with a 54-42 win Tuesday night at Amery.
“It was great to finally get on the floor and play our first game,” said Dave Kontny, SHS head coach. “You could tell the kids were getting a bit tired of practice. We did some really nice things tonight and overall I was pleased with our defense and our offense for our first game.”
Superior took a 19-8 lead after the first quarter and led by as many as 20 points, but Amery came up with some big shots late in the game to move closer in the final score. Amery outscored the Spartans 14-12 in the fourth quarter.
“Having played in the (Lake Superior Conference) Jamboree on Monday and then traveling Tuesday to Amery, you could see us get tired in the second half, but we still managed to control the game from the start to the finish,” Kontny said.
Erick Tunell led Superior with 17 points, and Bryan Sanders also reached double figures with 10 points. Jordan Hughes added eight points, Derek Kontny had seven, Nick Melhum has six, Anthony Valentine had four and Ben Erickson had two.
The Spartans were 6-for-7 at the free-throw line and Amery was 5-for-8.
“We had nice consistency with our scoring and everyone got a bunch of minutes, which is always nice,” Dave Kontny said.
Superior also won the junior varsity game, 78-25, and the freshmen game, 72-28.
“All three teams won, and anytime that happens you know your program had a great night,” Kontny said.
Superior also won the JV game 78-25 and the freshmen game 72-28.
The Spartans host Ashland at 7:15 p.m. on Dec. 6.
